Onimusha: Way of the Sword, originally presented by Capcom, plunges us into a dark fantasy reimagining of Edo-period Japan, a world where samurai clash not just with each other, but with supernatural forces. This installment marks the first main entry in the Onimusha series in two decades, bringing a fresh perspective to a beloved franchise. It’s a game that aims to blend familiar action-adventure elements with a deliberate, skill-based combat system.
At its core, the gameplay centers on Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai brought to life through the likeness of Toshiro Mifune. Players navigate a stylized Kyoto, facing a myriad of threats including rival swordsmen, and more sinister, demonic entities known as Genma. The combat emphasizes precision, requiring players to master the art of striking, parrying, and deflecting incoming attacks.
A key mechanic is the "Break Issen," a devastating finishing move unleashed after depleting an enemy's stamina. This allows for a swift, visceral dismemberment, a visual payoff for skillful play. Furthermore, chaining successful parries or dodges grants temporary combat buffs, enabling a flurry of rapid executions or powerful multi-hit attacks, rewarding players for mastering the rhythm of battle.
Musashi's abilities are enhanced by a sentient gauntlet that absorbs the souls of fallen foes. These souls serve a vital purpose, with yellow souls restoring health, red souls acting as currency for upgrades, and blue souls empowering "Oni Armaments," special weapons that deliver immense damage. This system creates a loop where offensive prowess directly fuels survivability and progression.
The gauntlet also grants Musashi "Oni Vision," a supernatural sight that highlights the presence of all demons and enemies within an area. This adds a layer of tactical awareness, allowing players to anticipate threats and plan their approach. While largely linear, the game incorporates open areas and side quests, offering moments of exploration beyond the main narrative path.
The plot kicks off with Miyamoto Musashi dueling the master swordsman Yoshioka Seijuro, ultimately crippling his arm. Forced to flee, Musashi witnesses Yoshioka's demise at the hands of an unknown entity, a prelude to his own fatal encounter with supernatural creatures. He and his rival, Sasaki Ganryu, are ambushed and killed by these Genma.
Musashi awakens in Hell, where a mysterious "Man in White" attaches an Oni Gauntlet to his arm, returning him to the mortal realm. Now bound to the gauntlet, he learns he must defeat the Genma and absorb their souls to power it, with the threat of death if he attempts to remove it. The gauntlet then directs him to seek out Ono no Takamura.
Upon finding Takamura and his apprentice Izumo no Okuni, Musashi discovers Takamura is an "Onimusha," a warrior chosen by the Oni to guard the gate to Hell. Takamura reveals the Genma's goal is to escape their eternal prison, and tasks Musashi with eliminating them and their invasion Rifts, thereby strengthening his gauntlet with their souls.
As Musashi purifies sanctuaries and vanquishes Genma, he encounters Ganryu once more, who has been resurrected and empowered by a rival Oni Gauntlet from the Man in White. Ganryu becomes consumed by his newfound power, turning to slaughtering humans for their souls, creating a dark mirror to Musashi's own path. This sets up a compelling conflict between two flawed warriors.
Eventually, Musashi awakens the Oni soul within his gauntlet, Shizuka Gozen. Shizuka reveals that the Man in White is actually Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the leader of a Genma army that annihilated the Oni. With the Oni vanquished, the Onimusha, like Musashi, become the last line of defense against Yoshitsune's ambition to invade the mortal realm.
The narrative deepens with the introduction of Dokyo, a woman aiding Yoshitsune, and the revelation of a past connection between Shizuka and Yoshitsune. Shizuka confesses that Yoshitsune was once an Oni recruit, imprisoned when his thirst for power became uncontrollable. This adds a tragic layer to the conflict, hinting at a corrupted hero.
Musashi faces Ganryu again, now aided by the Oni spirit Gioh inhabiting his gauntlet, and suffers a humiliating defeat. Briefly tempted to embrace human soul absorption to match Ganryu's might, Musashi ultimately rejects this path, choosing to trust in his companions and his own innate power. This moment highlights his character development and moral conviction.
This resolve is tested when he battles the Oni traitor Shuten Douji. His unwavering trust in Shizuka and his friends allows him to channel the Oni's power, transforming briefly and dispatching the traitor. This transformation is a significant turning point, demonstrating his growing mastery over his demonic heritage.
A critical sanctuary, Arashiyama, comes under threat, where Dokyo has manipulated Ganryu into her scheme to corrupt it. In the ensuing confrontation, Ganryu loses an arm and perishes without his gauntlet, while Dokyo is wounded and forced to retreat. This battle signifies a major setback for the antagonists, though not a decisive victory.
As Musashi is drawn away, Gioh ambushes and kills Okuni to reclaim Ganryu's gauntlet, but Okuni sacrifices herself to revive him. In a desperate act, Takamura removes his own gauntlet to revive Okuni, only for Yoshitsune to possess her and fatally wound Takamura. This sequence of events is a tragic cascade, emphasizing the high stakes.
Ganryu absorbs Takamura's soul, using it to open the gate to Hell to confront Yoshitsune, only to be swiftly dispatched. Yoshitsune seizes all the collected souls, including Takamura's, breaking open the Oni Gate and constructing a colossal palace atop it. This signifies his ultimate ambition to transcend mortal limitations.
Musashi ascends the palace and confronts Yoshitsune, who reveals that Musashi and Ganryu were unwitting pawns, gathering souls for his apotheosis. By merging human, Genma, and Oni souls, Yoshitsune intends to achieve godhood and reshape reality itself. Musashi's final battle against him is a desperate struggle for the fate of existence.
Ultimately, Musashi defeats Yoshitsune, whose soul dissipates outside the natural cycle of rebirth. Shizuka departs to restore order in Hell, while Dokyo and a revived Ganryu escape, her own plan reaching fruition. Musashi absorbs the remaining Oni souls, healing himself, and he and Okuni part ways, their individual destinies now clear.
